Biography:

Bell, Malachi - (b. 1745; d. after Sept. 22, 1803) - Buried in cemetery at the site of the former Bell's Chapel on Bogue Sound, Carteret County. Site is on Bogue Parkway, MoreheadCity. 400 Mitchell Pkwy (SR 1196) on corner of Atlantic Drive, Morehead City, NC. Tombstone destroyed in development of BoguePark during the 1930s. Col. Malachi Bell's first appointment as officer in Revolutionary War was as 2nd major of Carteret County Minute Men, made by Provincial Congress, Hillsboro, August 1775. Next he was appointed as Lt Col and at the retirement/resignation of Col. Thomas I. Chadwick, Malachi was advanced to the rank of COL.

Malachi's will may be found on page 57 of the book "Joseph Bell and Some of his Descendants."

Malachi was also married to Sarah Full (or Fulford) Robertson. It is thought that all the children were mothered by Elizabeth Coale. (From "Joseph Bell and Some of his Descendants").

Colonel Malachi Bell was chosen as a Vestryman at St. John's Vestry in 1774 and a commissioner to oversee the building of the Methodist Church near Beaufort. He was appointed first a major for Carteret County Militia during the Revolutionary War, then, in 1779, he was appointed Colonel of the regiment. He was active in governmental politics in many ways, serving as a member to the Convention in 1789, State Legislature from Carteret County 1789-91, and later a senator.
