Biography:

William Gamble was born in 1740 in Virginia, possibly Louisa County. He married Mary Johnson Wash, in Culpeper County Virginia in 1759 and they had seven children. They were pioneers in Wilkes County, North Carolina in the 1770s where William received land grants totaling around one thousand acres near the Roaring River. A planter and miller, William was appointed Tax Assessor in 1778. He served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the First North Carolina Battalion under Major John Ashe and Colonel Thomas Clark in 1777 and 1778. (Col. Clark led his unit at Brandywine and Germantown in the late Summer and Fall of 1777 and the Brigade under his leadership participated in the Battle of Monmouth on 28 June 1778. No evidence was found to indicate whether or not William Gamble participated in those actions.) William lived only 39 years and his gravesite is thought to be in the Walnut Grove Community near Trap Hill North Carolina.
